Often
times as we pray the litany of the Blessed Mother we come upon a title that we
wonder about – sometimes is deals with the way we live, as when we recall her
humility, at other times it brings to mind jut a quality that she has because
of her Motherhood of Jesus.
Such is the title of Mirror of Justice. When we think of justice we automatically think of our judicial system and the fact that Mary had to be just in her decisions. Suppose for a second we think of that title as Mother of God’s Holiness – a reflection or mirror of His holiness. Then we look at her in a different fashion, although we can see where she is the mirror of His Justice.
In Sacred literature by “justice” is not usually meant fairness, equality or uprightness in dealings as nowadays. Rather it denotes all virtues at once, a perfect virtuous state of soul, moral perfection, hence sanctity. We might ask our Lady to help us with those qualities.
In everyday life, when people live with those they love or cherish – such as husband and wife, parents and children, brothers and sisters, friends with friends – in the course of time they grow more like each other. In their voices, their language, there handwriting, their walk – they become like each other Even in their minds, opinions, tastes, interest and pursuits as also their state of soul, whether for good or bad. Think how true and strong has been the fore of familiar companionships and influence for good or will. Even St Teresa of Avila mentions in her autobiography how bad friends influenced her in her earlier life, Take a look at our own life and see how true and strong has been the force of familiar companionship and influence for good or evil in all in own relationship as with relatives friend and others.
Now let us look at Mary and her relationship with her God and Son. What an immeasurable love and that in most intimate companionship for the space of thirty years. She was full of grace before she conceived Him, but what a vast incomprehensible holiness must have hen hers later after she had lived so close to God during all that time. Her holiness was greater than that of the angels reflecting the holiness of God with a fullness and exactness of which no angel or saint in heaven or on earth can adequately remind us.
Take a look at our patron saint and compare the saint’s holiness with that of Mary and see where she far exceeds anything asked of them as Mary did in her life.
