What makes you women special? Think about it. God gave you a soul just like the rest of humanity. He gave you looks so that you are attractive to others in the world. Your vulnerability to the pain someone else is suffering - we call it compassion - that seems to be your trademark. From the old Latin CUM meaning with and the verb PATI meaning suffering we come up with compassion - being able to suffer with someone.
Mary had her seven sorrows finally ending with the death of her Son on the Cross. How many other times during the life of Christ did she suffer while people were trying to harm Him?
Women along the Way of the Cross demonstrated their compassion by challenging the soldiers and crowd to see Him. Veronica by wiping His face did a bold thing by showing her compassion. She dared this and was allowed to do this unheard of intervention because her husband was one of the chief people in the Sanhedrin - but her compassion lives yet today.
Women in general long to make things better, making it easier for others - they use their compassion. Men too have a bit of compassion as they especially see their families suffer or a fellow comrade in arms.
St. Matthew: Jesus summoned His disciples and said “My heart is moved with pity for the crowd for they have been with me for three days and have had nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry”.
St. John: If someone who has worldly means sees a brother in need and refuses him compassion how can the love of God remain in him?”
Christ gave us the corporal works of mercy, and equates them with a necessity that unless we use them we can not get to heaven.
So - what can we do to show compassion?
Take some time out of our busy lives to visit someone in the hospital - maybe not even knowing them as we suffer with
them.
Get with someone who might have emotional suffering and give them a shoulder.
Try to help a young or old couple who may not have the necessities of life to make life a little better.
Ask God, if you have not already a good compassion, to help strengthen your compassion to make you another Mary or
Veronica or someone along life’s Way of the Cross.
