Every month when we read the standing instructions we come to a part that for many is a real hard thing to
do. When we are told to look at our cases in the eyes of Christ, it is a little difficult, especially with some of
them, to try to work in the idea of charity., Now many of us are not Edel Quinns and the idea of really testing
our charity on some of the people meet can be quite a task.
There is nothing in man more divine, more Christ like, than his meekness and patience in doing good. Of all
the virtues leading to Salvation, the saints suggest, we should try to seek mainly those that benefit our
neighbor. In the things of the world no one lives for himself. Everyone, the craftsman, the soldier, the
farmer contribute to the common good and the good of their neighbor. He who lives only for himself and
despises his neighbor is useless.
Our Lord’s repeated calls for us to be charitable at all times and especially in this New Commandment, must
stimulate us to follow His lead by finding concrete ways of being of help to others, such as making those at
our side happy, realizing that we can never be too extravagant in the practice of virtue - even to those who
will not recognize our efforts. By doing small works of charity to those in need, that is our cases, we can
some times win them over –a simple word of encouragement, a kind gesture. In the eyes of God, all of this
is very pleasing and draws us closer to Him. In our prayers at our meetings we should also consider areas
where we can easily lack charity if we are not careful: rash judgments, negative criticism, neglect of others
due to self centeredness and forgetfulness The Christian way of conduct is not the way of an eye for an eye
and a tooth for a tooth, but to do good always, even though occasionally such an attitude will not result in
any human gain in this world but think of what a little charity can do for one who is out of the church and
expecting you to help them back in.
Charity makes us understanding, ready to forgive, fit to live along side everyone so that those who think
and act differently from us in a social, political and even in religious matters will also have a claim to our
respect and charity. We must always remember that the least bit of charity in what we give to those that are
trying to get to heaven might just be the means with the help of the Blessed Mother. We have to remember
that we are soldiers in her army, under her command and must act accordingly. If we see others through the
eyes of Mary and her Son it might put a much different slant on the case we are working on and have a
better understating what and how much charity they might need to get home.
